I’m in ur Startlegram, makin’ yur n00z
Thanks for the quote, I appreciate that the Star-Telegram is trying to involve us lowly bloggers in the discussion about the City Council race.
For the record, I live in Ryan Place, but Fairmount is close enough.
I’m interested in the quote that Joel gave for that tidbit, that he was basically bulk-editing a bunch of domains that belonged to him and that Bernie’s just happened to be in there.
Huh.
I’m willing to accept that the redirect was an honest mistake, and we all know that those things happen. What bothers me is that Joel deliberately registered the name of someone whom he HAD to know would likely be a future opponent in an election. That shows amazing foresight (which is generally a good thing), but also pretty poor judgement, not to mention a total lack of respect for another person.
No matter who you support in this race, ask YOUR candidate to commit to the pledge that Bernie has laid out in this press release. I love Fort Worth because it’s full of genuinely nice people who care about their neighbors. Let’s try to keep that attitude of kindness and respect in our political discourse as well.

I’m not willing to accept the bulk editing excuse. How many domains must a person own to NOT notice when they’re redirecting someone else’s name to their own web site? I’ve registered hundreds of domain names, and I’ve never accidentally redirected someone’s name to my site or one of my clients’ sites (actually, even with hundreds of domain names under management, I’ve never been presented with or used a bulk-editing function for DNS information). I guess that’s because I’ve never registered another individual’s name. I guess that’s because there is never an ethical reason to purchase someone else’s name as a domain. Sorry for the venom tonight – I guess I’m just really disgusted by this whole mess. And, to be honest, I don’t have a lot of faith that any of the candidates are going to follow Bernie’s lead with respect to running a clean campaign. This weekend was a tough one for news – with Mistletoe Heights finalizing the details of an Urban Gas Drilling contract and with this milktoast response from Joel Burns about the URL business. Whatever. Tomorrow is a new day.
I suppose you’re right, Bret. We touch on this a bit during the podcast, and you’re right on every count.
I’ve been trying to be diplomatic, but I really do think this goes to a greater question of character for someone to do this kind of thing.
I doubt that any of the other candidates would make the same promise that Bernie has because they know they can’t keep it.
I can deal with milquetoast responses during a campaign, but if his reaction to his missteps so far and his continued NON-stances on issues is any indication, electing Joel Burns would be a milquetoast-fest of epic proportions on the City Council. That’s exactly the opposite of what we need with the current Oil-Man in Chief in city hall.
