Chuck Silcox – Champion of Gay Rights

On September 26, 2000, Chuck Silcox helped spearhead the addition of sexual orientation as a protected category under Fort Worth’s anti-discrimination ordinance.

Yesterday, he used sexual orientation as a wedge issue and to ridicule a fellow civil servant at a partisan political event, then tried to backtrack and said “I’m not trying to be derogatory about the young man. I’ve never even met him…”

But obviously you don’t think he can do the job of a city council member because he’s gay, right Chuck? Otherwise why would you have said what you did?

That’s funny, considering the reason you gave for supporting the anti-discrimination measure in 2000, that you’d “met a local man who was fired after his long-time employer learned from a co-worker that he was gay…”

Obviously Chuck thinks it’s okay if HE discriminates against someone else because of their sexual orientation, but he’s fine with making it against city code for anyone else to do it.

Get out and vote, people. I suggest you vote for Bernie, but you can vote for whomever you want. Just keep in mind the kind of people you want running the city you live in, and the image that you want that city to present to the world.

  1. [...] shows us that Chuck Silcox wasn’t always a bigot. One thing I was wondering, if Chuck Silcox is city employee and Joel Burns is a city employee, [...]

Don’t know what all of this was about but it may help Bernie in the long run which is one great thing that may come out of it. After listening to almost every single city council meeting in the past year, Chuck Silcox speaks up more for his constituents than most all others (except for Wendy Davis), he seems “real” and not hung up on his own ego and/or “diva-ness” — I like that about him. Plus he doesn’t act like a child of the Mayor and do that “yes Daddy, yes Daddy” stuff! He speaks his mind and that’s refreshing to see on this Council!! In other words, he doesn’t play into that “let’s all play nice in the sand box” type of mentality. I still have love for Mr. Silcox.

Suzette, I agree with you for the most part. I appreciate a council member who’ll stand up for his district, but I can’t stand the partisanship. I like that he’s worked to fight special tax districts for billion-dollar companies, but at the same time, he’s pretty quick to defend our OWN tax suckling in the fight against the BRAC process for the Naval JRB.

He’s on the committee to fight against the base being closed, which seems like an anti-conservative thing to do to me. Republicans are supposed to be AGAINST big government spending, so if closing the base is the right thing for the DoD to do, then shouldn’t they support it? Please note: I’m not in favor of the base being closed. I have no opinion on the matter, and I know it brings a lot of jobs to the area and money into the economy, particularly the bar and nightclub economy.

Shameless Commerce!
