The Cowtown Chronicles

Pete’s Plan For The Future

I’ve been reading a lot lately about commitment devices, and one of them is telling people about what you’re doing. The theory is that if you tell people about your goals and dreams, you’ll do what you said, because you don’t want to look like a failure. I tried this in January with my post about my resolutions for the year. One of them was to lose 60lbs. yeah, that didn’t happen. (For the record, I did lose around 10lbs, and I’ve dropped some fat, so at least that’s something.) Huh. I accomplished all the other stuff in that post, though!

So what? you may ask.

There’s a new plan on the horizon, and this one is financial. Yes, I’m going to start blogging about my personal finances. I’ve already cleared it with Jenna, and she agrees that we have nothing to hide or be ashamed of, so it’s cool with her. I’m going to talk in generalities about amounts for the most part, but you’ll just have to trust me when I say that they’re pretty accurate.

Why am I doing this?

I want to share my experiences with other people who have the same goals as me. I don’t intend to become like J.D. at Get Rich Slowly, but hopefully my success (because I WILL succeed) will inspire others to take the same steps and get control of their finances.

I’ve got a few pages of notes on what I’m going to do, and I’ll be sure to put copious links to what advice I’m using/taking, and hopefully you’ll be able to follow along. I’ll also post semi-regular updates on our net worth and total debt, along with where we’re saving money and how. I hope you’ll follow along on the ride.
