Roughly Drafted Likes My Question!

As you may know, I’m a Mac nerd, and an Apple Certified Technician. I read voraciously about new Mac-related technologies, and try to stay on top of the latest Mac news.

THE best site for truly in-depth and insightful coverage of the stuff that actually matters in the Mac world is Daniel Eran Dilger’s Roughly Drafted Magazine. Daniel doesn’t settle for just new product reviews and hardware gushing — he really digs in to the OS and the applications that Mac users love (and sometimes hate). He also provides more insightful (and just MORE) coverage of the personal and business computing markets, and Apple’s place in them, than any other outlet. Daniel handily out-analyzes (he actually uses the products!) the high-priced “analysts” most major media outlets rely on.

In addition to running Roughly Drafted, Daniel also contributes to AppleInsider, the most reliable Apple news and rumors site, and runs his own Apple-focused consulting company in San Francisco.

Why the long preamble? Daniel’s latest article was prompted in part by a question that I sent him regarding the recent announcement of Exchange ActiveSync support for iPhone in software version 2.0.

To summarize: Exchange and a Windows-based environment are hella expensive, and if your small or medium business doesn’t specifically need something that only Microsoft provides, then you should totally be looking at other solutions for your IT needs. Rather than spelling the end for Apple’s Mac OS X Server, ActiveSync support on iPhone is the trojan horse that will drive increased adoption of Apple products in the enterprise and SMB markets. (That’s what I thought too, but Apple hasn’t announced any plans to develop similar functionality in OS X Server, so it made me wonder if maybe they were just giving up that market.) Apple has never had a strong play in, nor stomach for the Enterprise market, but they have a really strong value proposition for SMBs that can’t afford, or shouldn’t be paying for, Microsoft’s solutions for that space.

Go read the article, Daniel puts it way better than I do.

If you’re looking for a hard-core Mac nerd with a BUSINESS and IT focus, not just “creative” experience, there’s a page up there along the top called “Hire Pete!” Give it a click and then give me a call.
